Lorain, OH : Elyria man killed in one-car Pittsfield Township crash on Monday, 17th April 2018

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle crash on state Route 58 in Pittsfield Township that left a 71-year-old Elyria man dead.

The crash occurred at 6:30 a.m. April 17, on Route 58 between Whitney and Merriam roads, according to a news release from the Highway Patrol.

Gary Thompson was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu north on Route 58, when he drove off the left side of the road and struck a large tree, the release said.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was not wearing his safety belt and the air bags deployed, the release said.

Thompson was the only person in the vehicle.

The Wellington Fire Department and Lorain County EMS assisted Highway Patrol troopers at the scene.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
