A Louisiana State Police trooper suffered minor injuries Saturday morning (Feb. 14) after his squad car was struck by a suspected impaired driver along Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish, according to authorities

The unidentified trooper was stopped along the right shoulder of eastbound I-10 near Highway 44 around 11:30 a.m. when a 2014 Nissan Versa driven by Christopher K. Morris crashed into the back of his squad car.

The trooper was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales with minor injuries, authorities said.

Morris, 46, of Gonzales, and a 13-year-old passenger also were transported to St. Elizabeth with minor injuries, authorities said. State Police said Morris tried to use the shoulder to pass another vehicle at the time of the crash. Investigators took a toxicology sample from Morris, which was sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Upon his release from the hospital, Morris is expected to be booked into Ascension Parish jail on charges of third-offense driving while impaired, two counts of vehicular negligent injuring, careless operation, driving under suspension and open container, authorities said.
