ANDOVER, MA : 'Very minor' injuries in bus crash on Interstate 495 on Tuesday, 11th June 2019
A tractor-trailer and a school bus carrying students from the Joseph G. Pyne Arts Magnet School collided on Interstate 495 Tuesday morning as the students were on a field trip, according to firefighters.
The 48 students, all 9 or 10 years old, and 9 chaperones were on their way to the Museum of Science in Boston when the bus and truck collided in the northbound lanes of the interstate near the interchange with Interstate 93, according to a press release from the Andover Fire Department.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by state police.
Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield said in a press release that two students suffered "very minor injuries" — described as cuts and scrapes.
They were treated by first responders after the students and chaperones were relocated to a nearby salt shed to wait for another bus. Firefighters said the salt shed provided a safer place to wait than the side of the interstate.
