San Diego, CA : One person dead after a fiery two-vehicle crash on Interstate 805 near La Jolla on Tuesday, Nov 17, 2015
One person is dead after a fiery two-vehicle crash on Interstate 805 near La Jolla.
It happened just after 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
It is unclear why a driver stalled on the freeway, whether the car ran out of gas or something else went wrong, but it led to an explosive and deadly crash, according to CHP.
A white Lexus IS 350 rear-ended a gray Nissan. It was stalled on the middle of the freeway on the southbound I-805 near the La Jolla Village Drive exit.
A woman was sitting inside the car when the Nissan was hit from the back at freeway speeds. It burst into flames and unfortunately the female driver died at the scene. Authorities have yet to release the woman's name.
Officers say the Nissan had stopped in the second of four lanes for some reason Tuesday night.
CHP talked to the distraught driver of the Lexus at the scene. His airbags deployed and he was able to get out of his car without being hurt, police said.
CALTRANS reduced traffic to one lane as CHP issued a Sig Alert, traffic was backed up for miles.
