Wichita, KS : One dead after a pickup collided with a dump truck in southern Sedgwick County on Wednesday, August 17, 2016
One man is dead after a pickup collided with a dump truck Wednesday on MacArthur Road, west of 135th Street West.
The driver of the gray Nissan pickup died at the scene, said Lt. Lin Dehning of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. He would not release further details on the man’s identity pending notification of his family.
Dehning said 911 calls about the crash came in shortly after 1:20 p.m. The pickup, he said, was headed east in the 13900 block of MacArthur when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.
It hit a white dump truck nearly head on, Dehning said. What caused the pickup’s driver to veer off course wasn’t immediately clear, he said.
Both vehicles ended up in a ditch on the south side of the road Wednesday afternoon as sheriff’s deputies, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers and other emergency responders surveyed the site.
Part of the surrounding grass was blackened by fire, which Dehning said started sometime after impact. Witnesses who arrived immediately after the crash pulled the man out of the pickup and tried to render aid, Dehning said, but were unsuccessful.
The dump truck is owned by a local trucking company and was driven by a 37-year-old Eureka man. He appeared to have minor injuries and was being evaluated by paramedics, Dehning said.
MacArthur Road reopened to traffic more than six hours after the collision.
