Two people died and a third was critically injured early Saturday in a collision involving a car and tractor trailer truck on Interstate 295 south of Blanding Boulevard in Jacksonville.
A 28-year-old Green Cove Springs man and one of his passengers, a 29-year St. Augustine woman died, while another passenger, Victor Williams, 29, of Green Cove Springs was taken to Orange Park Medical Center in critical condition, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Authorities withheld the names of the dead pending notification of their families. None of the three had been wearing safety belts, according to the Highway Patrol
They were in a 2002 Ford Mustang that collided with a Frieghtliner tractor trailer truck driven by Junior Jean, 32, of North Miami, about 2:20 a.m. on I-295 southbound at Blanding Boulevard. Neither Jean nor his passenger Usbaldo Lara, 70, of Miami were injured, according to the Highway Patrol.
The car and truck both had been southbound on the interstate. The truck was in the center lane. The Mustang was in the right lane when its driver lost control as he began to overtake and pass the truck. The car hit the tractor trailer truck then became trapped beneath it as both vehicles veered onto the shoulder, the Highway Patrol said.
