WAUKOMIS, OK : Local math teacher killed in head-on collision Saturday night on Saturday, February 17th 2017
Chisholm Public Schools Superintendent Roydon Tilley said preparations for grief counseling are underway in the wake of a Saturday night accident that killed Chisholm math teacher John Matousek on U.S. 81.
The head-on collision involving Matousek's vehicle came during the pursuit of another vehicle on U.S. 81, according to Waukomis Police Chief Robert Asch. He said his department was contacted by Enid police that a man involved in a road rage incident near Hutch's C-Store, 3206 S Van Buren, in Enid, left the store traveling south toward Waukomis.
Around 10 p.m., Waukomis Police Department saw a vehicle that matched the description given by Enid police heading south in the northbound lane on U.S. 81.
Several people posted on social media that they managed to avoid the vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Asch said the driver of the blue SUV-type vehicle crossed the median at the Skeleton Road intersection, north of Waukomis, making a u-turn before heading back north in the southbound lanes of traffic.
The driver nearly struck one vehicle, Asch said, and officers attempted to divert him off the road, but the driver struck a silver vehicle head-on, killing that driver.
The man being pursued was transported by LIFE EMS to Oklahoma City OU Medical Center. The vehicle he was driving was not registered to him, and his family was notified, Asch said.
Asch said he will not name the driver being pursued or the one killed as the incident still is under investigation.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol is completing a reconstruction of the accident, which Asch said is expected to be finished by Wednesday. Garfield County Sheriff's Office assisted with the accident and traffic control, and Waukomis Fire/Rescue units responded to the scene.
The southbound lanes of U.S. 81 were closed for more than 5 hours, from about 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday.
