KALAMAZOO, MI : Three people have been injured in a head-on collision on May, Wednesday, 24th 2017

At least three people have been injured in a head-on collision between a Kalamazoo Metro Transit bus and a car just west of downtown.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers are on the scene, at the intersection of Oakland Drive and South Street.

At least three people were placed into ambulances and the front of the bus is badly damaged. From the position of the vehicles, it appears the bus had been west by southwest where Michigan Avenue meets South Street and Oakland Drive. It was apparently headed out of the downtown via Oakland Drive. The car appeared to be headed east by northeast toward downtown.

"I don't know where the car came from, but it just came out of nowhere and it just hit us," said Chanell McPherson, 36, of Kalamazoo. The crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. on May 24.

McPherson said she was one of about six passengers on the bus when the collision occurred. She said she was not injured.

"I'm just shaken up, that's all," McPherson said. "I'm fine. I'm alive. I'm breathing."

Sgt. Christie Hofer, of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, said "three or four" people were being treated for injuries, "some more serious than others."

She called the scene "pretty chaotic" and said more information would be learned through the investigation of the crash scene.

The driver of the car, a mid-sized Pontiac, was a man. He was alone in that vehicle, officers said. The driver of the bus was a woman who needed to be transported by gurney to a local hospital.

Officers used a hydraulic took to free the driver of the car and help cut away portions of the front of the bus.
