Rehoboth, DE : A 35-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured in a crash on Sunday, August 13, 2017
A 35-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured in a crash involving a bicycle and a car east of Georgetown Aug. 13.
Georgetown resident David L. Clark was riding his bicycle west on Route 9, just east of Kits Burrow Court, in the roadway shortly before 6 a.m. At the same time, a 59-year-old Lewes man was driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the same road, just behind the bicyclist.
Due to the low light, the driver of the Jeep didn't see Clark on his bike, and hit the back of the bicycle with his front bumper, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of Delaware State Police.
Clark was thrown onto the front of the Jeep before he landed in the roadway. The driver immediately pulled over after the crash.
Clark, who was wearing dark clothing and had no helmet, was taken to Beebe Healthcare and admitted in serious but stable condition. He was cited for failing to stay to the right of the roadway while operating a bicycle.
The Jeep driver was uninjured.
Route 9 between Gravel Hill Road and Prettyman Road was closed for about 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
