Barre, VT : Woman dies in Barre City crash Saturday on July 5, 2014
Police say a Barre Town woman died in a car crash Saturday in which the driver reported a brake failure.
Barre Police Chief Timothy Bombardier said 82-year-old Elizabeth Ibey was pronounced dead at Central Vermont Medical Center after the crash at the intersection of Hill and Nelson streets. Her husband and the driver, Donald Ibey, 85, suffered only minor injuries.
According to Bombardier, police as well as Barre City Ambulance and Fire were dispatched to the crash around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Donald Ibey told police he was driving down Hill Street when he noticed cars were stopped for another vehicle making a turn onto Nelson Street. When he applied the brakes he told police he heard a pop and the brakes did not function.
Bombardier said Donald Ibey told police he swerved to the right to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of him.
An investigation revealed that the vehicle swerved to the right before going over the curbing and on to the sidewalk. The vehicle continued on to a lawn and down a short, steep embankment before the front of the vehicle struck Nelson Street, leaving deep gouge marks. Bombardier said the Ibeys’ vehicle then continued across Nelson Street over another grassy embankment before hitting trees and stumps and coming to a stop.
Nearby residents and other drivers at the scene provided assistance, according to Bombardier.
They found Donald Ibey shaken but suffering no serious injuries. Elizabeth Ibey had no pulse and was not breathing. Those at the scene began CPR until rescue personnel arrived and took over.
The couple was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, where Elizabeth Ibey was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.
Both Ibeys were wearing seat belts, according to Bombardier.
