Head-on crash with dump truck kills minivan driver on Barbur Blvd.
Portland police closed Southwest Barbur Boulevard at Miles Street Monday afternoon for about four hours after a fatal crash.
The crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. and police didn't reopen the road until just before 7 p.m.
A 2006 Ford minivan collided with a Portland Water Bureau dump truck, and the minivan caught fire, police said. The fire spread to the nearby hillside, but Portland firefighters were able to put it out.
The driver of the minivan was killed, according to police. She was identified as 55-year-old Debra Maymi.
The medical examiner determined she died of "blunt force trauma."
The driver of the dump truck, a 49-year-old city employee, was not injured.
Police say the driver of the city-owned dump truck cooperated with police and wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The truck driver and at least one other witness tried to pull the driver of the minivan from the burning wreckage, police said
"An eyewitness stopped and ran up to the van and tried to help the driver, get the person out, but the van caught fire and he was unable to retrieve the driver,” said Portland Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Police said the water bureau dump truck was traveling north on Barbur while the minivan was traveling south when the crash happened.
According to police, their preliminary investigation shows that the minivan suddenly crossed over the center line and into oncoming traffic. The minivan was thrown across the other lanes and caught fire after it was hit by the truck
