New Bedford, Massachusetts
A 56-year-old Dorchester man was seriously injured late Thursday night when he was partially ejected from the stolen car he was driving, police said.
The man’s left arm was severed at the elbow and he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, according to Lt. Amos Melo, a spokesman for the New Bedford Police Department.
His identity is being withheld while police contact his family, Melo said. He is listed in serious condition.
About 10:30 p.m. Thursday, detectives spotted a Honda Civic operating the wrong way on Acushnet Avenue near Beetle Street, he said. As detectives attempted to pull over the car it sped off and eventually got onto Route 18 southbound.
As the detectives got onto Route 18, they later discovered the car had crashed at the Purchase Street exit, he said. The car struck a guardrail and rolled over upon impact and the driver was partially ejected.
The car he was driving was stolen near Paul’s Sports Corner, Fairhaven, shortly before being spotted by detectives, he said.
The driver had no identification on him and his identity was unknown until Friday morning when New Bedford detectives were able to fingerprint and identify him, Melo said.
The man has an extensive record in Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, according to Melo. It has been learned that there is a full extradition warrant from Atlanta, Ga., for parole violations and also an outstanding warrant from Brookline District Court for him.
The New Bedford Police Department’s accident reconstruction team is assisting in the investigation. He will be facing several charges.
