Logan, UT : Motorcyclist killed in crash at state line on Saturday, July 30, 2016
A 31-year-old Richmond motorcyclist was killed Saturday after he failed to see a farm vehicle on U.S. 91 that slowed in the travel lane to make a left turn.
The Utah Highway Patrol said Mario Andrew Mainini was riding a motorcycle southbound in the left lane on U.S. 91, just south of the Idaho state line. Ahead of him, a truck pulling a flatbed trailer slowed to a near-stop to make a left-hand turn.
Lt. Lee Perry said Mainini slammed into the back of the trailer with an impact that caused the rider’s helmet to come off and he suffered fatal injuries. Witnesses told emergency dispatchers they believed he died immediately.
Investigators say they do not know why Mainini didn’t see the slowing vehicle in front of him, but they do believe excessive speed was a factor in the crash. An inspection of the truck showed that all of the lights were in proper working order.
The inside lane both north and southbound were closed for about two and a half hours while the crash was investigated.
