Sunbury, PA : Girl in critical condition following pedestrian accident in the city on Thursday, October 27, 2016

A Shikellamy High School student remains in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center after an early morning accident at 10th and Chestnut streets in the city on Thursday.

The student was on the way to the high school when she was struck by a vehicle, Shikellamy School District Superintendent Brett Misavage said. Authorities have not yet released the accident victim's name.

"The district received numerous calls about a student being hit at the intersection and administrators rushed to the scene," but the student was already en route to the hospital, Misavage said.

Misavage rushed to the hospital and met with family members and said administrators and staff members were saddened by the news.

"This day has been very trying," Misavage said.

The student is currently in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit at Geisinger Medical Center, in Danville, Sunbury police Capt. Steve Bennick said.

The accident occurred at around 7:09 a.m. and Chestnut Street was closed for several hours following the incident, Bennick said. The accident investigation is being handled by officer Vern Petty, Bennick said. An accident reconstruction crew was on the scene until around 11:30 a.m., Bennick said.

The Shikellamy School District has a crossing guard who works from 7:20 a.m. until 7:50 a.m. at the intersection of 10th and Chestnut, where the accident occurred, but the crossing guard is there for elementary students who ride the bus to Oaklyn and Chief Shikellamy Elementary Schools, Misavage said.

There was no crossing guard at the intersection at the time of the accident, Misavage said.

"We will continue to support the family as well as provide counseling support to the Shikellamy faculty, staff and students during this difficult time," Misavage said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family."

Misavage said the district took quick action for its students and staff.

"I think we always take the approach of safety first for our students before and after school," Misavage said. "This is just a very awful situation for all involved."

The district provided additional counselors at the high school this morning for any student or staff member who may have needed to talk, Misavage said.

"The high school counselors remained active through the afternoon and we will monitor the situation throughout the evening and tomorrow and continue to provide services to those who may need them," Misavage said.

School board president Wendy Wiest said when she was made aware of the situation she was stunned.

"The entire Shikellamy community is saddened by this tragedy," Wiest said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and family."
