Maquel Lee McMullen may have only been 11, but he could hang with the older kids, skating with them Saturday nights at Kate's Skating Rink.
McMullen was popular at North Belmont Elementary School with students, teachers and even the principal.
But he always had time to play with a neighbor’s son who has autism. McMullen made sure to hug the boy in a way that the boy was comfortable with and even defended him against bullies.
These are snapshots of a fifth-grader, stories shared by friends who took to the Internet to voice sadness and outrage at his death in a car crash Wednesday.
The crash near the intersection of Pinhook Road and Cabin Street, north of McAdenville, also injured three others.
The suspected driver in the single-vehicle wreck, 24-year-old Jason Eugene Pruitt II, called his 65-year-old grandmother Brenda Oliver from jail. He faces involuntary manslaughter, misdemeanor death by vehicle and child abuse charges, along
with seat belt violations, driving without a license and reckless driving.
"All he could do was cry and say he was so sorry," Oliver said of her grandson's jailhouse phone call.
