Statesboro, GA : A head-on collision in Laurens County on Sunday, November, 26th 2017

Two Georgia Southern University students were killed Sunday morning in a head-on collision in Laurens County.

Jack Deacon Harris of Kennesaw, and Garrett Harris of Dallas, Ga., were killed around 6:24 a.m. Sunday when a Toyota Avalon driven by Jared Adler of Sandy Springs struck them head-on as they traveled east on Interstate 16 near mile marker 34, according to Dublin Georgia State Patrol reports.

Adler, 27, was driving a Saturn westbound, the wrong way, in the eastbound lane in which both victims were traveling. Adler was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing, reports stated.

The Avalon burst into flames and burned upon impact, reports stated. Both Jack Harris, 20, and Garrett Harris, 18, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The university released a statement regarding the accident and resulting student deaths.

“The Georgia Southern University community is saddened to learn of the accident that resulted in the loss of two of our students, Garrett Harris and Jack Deacon Harris,” the statement read. “Our deepest sympathies go out to their family and friends and our thoughts are with them during this time. Counseling is available for our students as we all grieve this tragedy.”
