Oakland, CA : Five people injured in chain-reaction crash on southbound Interstate 880 at the Broadway exit on Monday, Sep 7, 2015

A crash involving three cars spilled onto a freeway on-ramp and sent five people to the hospital Monday, but none were seriously injured, the California Highway Patrol said.

A Ford Windstar minivan wound up on its roof, and a Ford Fiesta went down an embankment during the crash, which happened on southbound Interstate 880 at the Broadway exit around 6:10 p.m. and also involved a Buick LeSabre, CHP spokesman Sean Wilkenfeld said by email.

The Buick was in the far left lane and going between 60-70 mph when it's left front tire went flat, Wilkenfeld said. The driver lost control, and the car careened to the right across three lanes and crashed into the Windstar. Those two cars then went further right, through a wood-and-metal guard rail and into the Fiesta that was on the Broadway on-ramp to I-880 north

The Windstar overturned and rested on its roof, Wilkenfeld said. The Buick landed on its wheels but blocked the on-ramp. The Fiesta went down a dirt embankment before coming to a stop.

An ambulance took the Windstar driver to Highland Hospital with moderate injuries, while two other children in the car were taken to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital for precautionary reasons, Wilkenfeld said. The drivers of the Buick and Fiesta also were taken by ambulance to hospitals for precautionary reasons.

The northbound Broadway on-ramp and the far right lane of I-880 in that direction were closed for approximately 40-50 minutes while police investigated and cleared the scene.
