GARY, IN : A 57-year-old woman was killed and four others were injured in a crash on May, Tuesday, 16th 2017
A 57-year-old woman was killed and four others were injured early Tuesday when a semi truck and medical transport vehicle collided in the city's Ambridge neighborhood, officials said.
Kathy Flowers, of Gary, died after the crash about 5:30 a.m. at Fourth Avenue and Rutledge Street, officials said. Flowers was one of three people in a Prompt Ambulance medical transport vehicle.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:35 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office. Her death was ruled an accident, though the cause of death remained pending.
Three other adults in the transport vehicle and the semi driver were injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital, police Lt. Dawn Westerfield said.
Westerfield could not release information about the passengers in the Prompt vehicle because of medical privacy laws, she said.
Details about how the crash happened remained pending further investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's traffic reconstruction unit and Gary police, she said.
Police shut down Fourth Avenue, which runs one way westbound, several blocks east of the crash scene and diverted traffic to the south.
The wrecked transport vehicle and semi sat on the north side of Fourth Avenue, on the lawn in front of the vacant Ambridge school building.
