Phoenix fatal crash victims identified by police
Police have identified the two drivers who were killed Saturday evening when their sport-utility vehicles collided in southwest Phoenix.
Francisco Carranza Sanchez, 50, and Miriam Gonzalez, 41, were killed after Sanchez crashed his 1999 Ford Expedition into Gonzalez’s 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe near 83rd Avenue and Durango Street, Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.Sanchez was speeding north on 83rd Avenue at about 6:40 p.m. when he crossed over the center line near Pomo Street, north of Durango, and collided head on with Gonzalez’s Tahoe, Thompson said. Both died at the scene.Following the crash, another vehicle that was driving south on 83rd Avenue crashed into the two SUVs, he said. The people inside did not suffer life-threatening injuries.Investigators discovered the Expedition had been involved in another crash just before the fatal collision and had fled the scene, Thompson said. The details of that accident were not immediately available.The investigation is ongoing.
