Bethlehem Township, PA : One dead at rollover crash on Route 33 South ramp in Bethlehem Township on Wednesday afternoon, November 12, 2014
Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania
At least one person is dead in a rollover tractor-trailer crash Wednesday afternoon on the Route 33 South ramp from Route 22 East in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania, authorities report.
Crews headed to the crash just after 1 p.m. with initial reports of heavy entrapment and fire, according to emergency reports.
The Northampton County Coroner's Office and Pennsylvania State Police at Belfast were investigating the crash. The coroner only responds to incidents involving a death.
The truck, described by police as a 2004 Mack, appeared to be hauling cement. Police did not immediately identify the driver.
The trailer came around to the left of the cab as it rounded the right curve on the ramp, causing the rig to turn onto its side and slide in a southeast direction, state Trooper Dennis Simms said.
The cab impacted the end of a guardrail and came to a stop.
Authorities draped a blue tarp over the cab. There was no indication any other vehicle was involved.
PennDOT closed the ramp to Route 33 South as crews investigate and clear the wreck.
State police declined to comment at the scene, except to say the immediate goal was to get the truck removed and the ramp reopened. A Fast Lane Towing & Transport super-wrecker arrived about 2 p.m. but parked on the shoulder of the ramp while the investigation continued.
