Seattle, WA : One dead, one injured when bike collides with bus in Seattle on Saturday, May 14, 2016

A man was killed and a woman seriously injured late Saturday after the bike they were riding collided with a Sound Transit bus operated by Metro in the Chinatown International District.

The crash occurred at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and South Main Street at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, according to Seattle police.

The two people were riding on the same bike.

The man, whose name has not been released, was found unconscious with life-threatening injuries at the scene. The woman was conscious with serious injuries, according to police. They were taken to Harborview Medical Center, where the man later died.

According to Sound Transit spokesman Geoff Patrick, the Route 554 Seattle-Issaquah bus was traveling southbound on Fifth Avenue South. The bike struck the center of the articulated, “accordion-style” bus.

“Fifth Avenue has a fair number of buses that head to the Eastside, because they can get on the I-90 ramp,” he said.

The incident is under investigation.

The bus driver was cleared by a police-department drug-recognition expert and was not found to be intoxicated.

A mechanical failure was ruled out, said police.
