SCIO, NY : Scio man charged in fatal accident early today on Monday, May 29, 2017
The death of a Wellsville man this morning after he was struck by a car on county Route 18 has led to a manslaughter charge against the driver.
Amity-based State Police reported the arrest today of Todd V. Gardner, 43, of Scio on charges of second-degree manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
At 12:29 a.m., troopers responded to Route 18 for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Gardner was driving north in a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro and struck Douglas R. Brauen, 37. Troopers said Brauen sustained injuries, but was alert and responsive. Further investigation revealed that Gardner was allegedly under the influence and he was arrested. Gardner was given a breath test at the State Police barracks in Amity and the result was a blood-alcohol content of .11 percent.
State Police said Brauen was transported to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville to be treated for possible leg fractures. During treatment, Brauen went into cardiac arrest and died.
Gardner was arraigned and sent to the Allegany County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
District Attorney Keith Slep advised police and Coroner Ted Crowell pronounced Brauen dead. The investigation is ongoing.
