Longmont, CO : Motorcycle rider killed in a crash in Longmont on Monday, 21st May 2018
The Boulder County Coroner's Office on Monday identified the motorcycle rider killed in a crash in Longmont over the weekend as Ryan Whitesides.
Whitesides, 28, of Longmont, was driving a sport motorcycle on 17th Avenue approaching Gay Street on Sunday when he laid his motorcycle down on the ground and was hit by a full-size van, according to police.
He was taken to Longmont United Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The coroner's office has not yet released the cause and manner of death, which is pending further investigation, according to a news release.
Longmont police Sgt. Eric Lewis said it's still too early to definitively say what caused the crash, but they are investigating speed on the motorcyclist's part as a factor.
Witnesses to the crash reported that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed, police said. Police closed 17th Avenue and Gay Street for several hours Sunday afternoon during the investigation.
Lewis isn't expecting to charge anyone in the crash, he said, though that could change as police investigate further.
Anyone who witnessed the crash and wasn't contacted by Longmont police is asked to call 303-651-8555 and ask for the traffic unit.
