Hammond, LA : Truck driver killed in 2-vehicle wreck on Monday, February 20th 2017
A truck driver was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Franklinton.
According to the Louisiana State Police, April Bertoniere, 36, Bogalusa, was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer eastbound on LA 10. Investigators said, for reasons still under investigation, she was driving at a slow rate of speed and was partially in the right shoulder and partially in the eastbound lane.
Christopher Blansett, 30, was driving a log truck eastbound on LA 10 and entered the westbound lane in attempt to pass the explorer, state police said.
Not long after Blansett entered the westbound lane, Bertoniere abruptly turned left from the shoulder to enter a private drive on the westbound side of the roadway, troopers said, and Blansett applied breaks to avoid a crash.
"Due to Blansett's aggressive braking, the load he was hauling shifted, slid forward, and pushed through the cab of the tractor," said Trooper Dustin Dwight.
Blansett was pronounced dead at the scene. Bertoniere's vehicle was not hit, and she did not report any injuries.
Investigators said all drivers were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol is not a suspected contributing factor to the accident. Bertoniere provided a voluntary breath sample which showed no presence of alcohol. The breath sample will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Any violations of Louisiana Law will be forwarded to the Washington Parish District Attorney's Office for prosecution, Dwight said.
