ATHENS, AL : Highway 72 eastbound in Athens shut down after fatal crash on Saturday, 10th February 2024
A man died and multiple people were injured following a wreck on Highway 72 in Athens on Saturday night.
According to the Athens Police Department, the incident happened around 8:05 p.m. on Line Road. A vehicle traveling westbound on U.S. 72 crossed a grassy median and struck a vehicle in the eastbound lane of oncoming traffic.
Police said Athens-Limestone Ambulance and Athens Fire & Rescue also assisted at the scene. Two people were transported to Athens Limestone Hospital. Limestone County Coroner Mike West pronounced one person dead at the scene. According to Athens Police, the victim has been identified as 31-year-old Antonio Marcel Langford, of Athens. Langford was the driver of the eastbound vehicle.
Athens Police warned that a major artery out of the city was closed for several hours.
