Welsh, LA: LC man leads law enforcement on chase before crashing stolen car on Friday, July 31st 2015
A Lake Charles man led Jeff Davis authorities on a pursuit on Interstate 10 Friday in a stolen vehicle before wrecking it on U.S. 90 just west of Welsh.James Alan Smith, 25, of 800 Holly Street, was arrested by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office on charges of flight from an officer, possession of stolen goods, driving under suspension and numerous traffic violations.He is also wanted for burglary and auto theft by Wake County, N.C. authorities.Smith is also wanted by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Lake Charles Police Department for burglary and stolen property charges.The pursuit began around 10:30 a.m. after sheriff deputies attempted to stop Smith's vehicle on I-10.Smith fled and led deputies on a pursuit off I-10 through Welsh on LA 99 and west on U.S. 90 toward Lacassine before losing control of his vehicle in a curve. The vehicle was struck from behind by a Welsh police unit.Smith exited the vehicle and fled on foot across a barbed wire fence and into an open
pasture where he was apprehended.He was booked into the Jeff Davis Parish Jail without bond.
