Wilmington, DE : Wilmington man killed in crash north of Middletown on Sunday, 30th October 2016
A Wilmington man was killed in an early morning crash Sunday north of Middletown, according to state police.
Donald K. Phipps, 54, was driving north just before 5 a.m. on Del. 896 near Bethel Church Road when for unknown reasons, his 2014 Toyota Corolla left the west side of the road and crossed the median, said Sgt. Richard Bratz, a spokesman for the Delaware State Police. The vehicle then crossed the southbound lanes of Del. 896 and continued in a northwesterly direction until the front left portion of the car hit a large tree, he said.
The vehicle spun about 90 degrees after the impact and came to a stop a short distance from the tree facing west, Bratz said.
Phipps, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Bratz said.
Traffic was not impacted as the crash was investigated and cleared, he said.
