Belle Glade, FL : Two people died, one hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash involving a car and two semis in Belle Glade on Thursday morning, March 10, 2016
The young man who was driving that car was 21-year-old Jeremy Banks. His grandfather, Willie Alexander, tells us Jeremy's young life was cut short while he was driving down this road early this morning.
It was just before 4 a.m. when Alexander called his grandson to make sure he made it to work. But Jeremy Banks, "JT" as his family calls him, didn't pick up.
"I kept calling kept calling but it went straight to voicemail," says Alexander.
Alexander rushed out of the house to search for his grandson after he learned JT never made it to work.
He pulled up to this gruesome scene and was stopped by an officer.
"I said, 'is it a Mazda millennium, gold?' She said, 'yes.' So pretty much in my heart I knew but I was just praying you would be alright."
But JT was not alright. He was hit by a tractor-trailer, his car pushed into the median. The truck was hit by another semi. Both JT and one of the truck drivers were killed at the scene.
The 21-year-old lost his life just days after his grandfather fixed his Mazda.
"I would tell him all the time, I would say, 'son got to be careful on the highway.' I would say you got to pay attention," said Alexander.
But that advice couldn't save his first grandson.
"It hurt but I just got to be strong for my family."
JT had plans to go to college.
The second victim has been identified as 54-year-old Martin Willis Gray of Ocala.
SR 80 has reopened, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
