STANTON, KY : 1 killed in wrecks as smoke reduces visibility in Kentucky on Wednesday, November 16th 2016

Kentucky State Police say one man has died and about 14 other people have been injured in a series of wrecks in eastern Kentucky where smoke from wildfires decreased visibility.

Trooper Scott Ferrell said a coal truck driver died Wednesday morning when he exited his truck to check on a driver whose vehicle had hit the truck and was hit by a third vehicle.

Ferrell said about 15 vehicles were involved in chain reaction collisions around 9 a.m. on the Mountain Parkway. The wrecks happened in Powell County and kept the parkway closed down for nearly 10 hours. He warned motorists in the area to use caution.

The area is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest.

The Kentucky Division of Emergency Management says more than 260 fires have burned more than 44,000 acres since late October. The agency said 11 fires are active in the national forest.
