BOYNE CITY, MI : An early morning accident in Boyne City on Friday, September 1, 2017
An early morning accident in Boyne City caused a power outage affecting a majority of the downtown and southern portions of the city Friday morning.
Boyne City Police officer Kyle Smith said that the outage was caused when a car hit a utility pole around 1 a.m. on M-75 (Boyne Avenue) near East Main Street. The driver, according to Smith, was young and fell asleep, but no injuries occurred thanks to a seat belt and airbag.
"It's just the one pole in town that you don't want to get hit, got hit." Smith said.
Consumers Energy spokesperson Roger Morgenstern said the pole's location requires the workers to shut off power.
"We're scheduled to get it back up around noon, but we have to replace the pole. To keep everyone safe we have to keep the power off to replace it.
An estimated 1,391 customers are affected by the power outage. For updated information, visit Consumer's Energy's outage map.
