Carlisle, PA : Man injured after crossover I-81 crash on Wednesday, February 1, 2017

A crossover crash involving two tractor-trailers shut down both lanes of traffic on Interstate 81 south Wednesday and sent two people to the hospital.

David K. Mensah, 57, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center after the tractor-trailer he was driving in the northbound lanes of I-81 around 7:45 p.m. crossed the median near mile-marker 43.8 in Dickinson Township. His vehicle struck the trailer of a tractor-trailer traveling in the southbound lanes and struck a guiderail at the southbound on-ramp from the Allen Road exit, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Mensah was wearing his seatbelt but was ejected from the vehicle after striking the guiderail, police said.

A 32-year-old Worcester Massachusetts man who was traveling in Mensah’s vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Carlisle Regional Medical Center, according to police.

The driver of the tractor-trailer stuck by Mensah was uninjured in the crash, police said.

Crews from Citizen Fire Company out of Mount Holly Springs, Carlisle Fire and Rescue and Goodwill EMS assisted on scene.

A fluid leak on the roadway was controlled and treated by crews from PennDOT, police said.

Both lanes of travel were closed to allow Life Lion to transport Mensah and the right lane and on-ramp remained closed for about four hours, according to police.

Wednesday night’s crash occurred roughly two miles south of a crossover crash that happened at the end of December.

In that incident a dump truck that was traveling in the southbound lane near mile-marker 45.8 blew out a tire causing it to cross the median and strike a tractor-trailer head on.
