Belmont ,NC : One Pedestrian hit and killed by a vehicle overnight on Sunday early morning ,May 17th 2015

The Highway Patrol says an Iredell County man may have been drunk when he was hit and killed by a vehicle overnight.

The incident reportedly happened 1 a.m. Sunday on Wilkinson Boulevard in Belmont.

Officials say the pedestrian was walking in the middle of a bridge over the Catawba River when he was hit. The man was reportedly walking from Mecklenburg County toward Gaston County.

Belmont police say witnesses described the man as wearing a black hat and dark clothing.

Police have not released the man's name, because they need to notify next of kin first, but they will confirm that he is from Iredell County.

The driver of the vehicle was interviewed by police and released. Police say the vehicle was impounded per departmental investigative procedures.

According to police, the deadly accident is under investigation.
