An 18-year-old man who realized he was traveling the wrong way on the Veterans Expressway Sunday morning crashed after driving onto the median and off an overpass, troopers said.

Basil Avatar Scruby, of Largo, was treated for minor injuries at Town & Country Hospital and cited for careless driving, according to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Scruby got on the expressway in his 2007 Ford sedan from Waters Avenue and realized he was heading south in the northbound lanes as he approached Hillsborough Avenue, troopers said.

Scruby traveled onto the dirt median in a construction area and drove off an overpass, troopers said. The car launched over a gap with the front hitting a new bridge support and the back falling the ground so the vehicle was nearly vertical.
