PORT ANGELES, WA : Bicyclist hurt after crashing bike on Dry Hill near Port Angeles on Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Firefighters rescued a 62-year-old bicyclist who crashed his bike on Dry Hill west of Port Angeles on Tuesday evening.

Dry Hill is a downhill bicycle trail network on state Department of Natural Resources land that is maintained by the Olympic Dirt Society.

The call came from one of three bike riders who said the man crashed and was injured, according to a news release.

They were a couple miles past a locked gate and about a quarter-mile down a bike trail.

Clallam County Fire District No. 2 firefighters used a single-wheeled Stokes litter to transport the patient out of the woods. The man was transported to Olympic Medical Center for evaluation.

Assistant Chief Mike DeRousie said he couldn’t identify the man but said he is from Port Angeles.

DeRousie said the fire district had just purchased the wheeled Stokes litter and received it two days before the rescue.

“With so many miles of trails … we decided to work it into our budget and get one because of the need,” he said.
