Newberry Springs, California
A man ejected from his tractor-trailer in a collision on Interstate 40 west of Fort Cady Road late Thursday night was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol officials said a male passenger in the 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer’s sleeper berth suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Barstow Community Hospital.
The collision was reported a little after after 9 p.m.
Authorities said the Volvo was traveling in the westbound No. 1 lane and was approaching “slowing” traffic ahead.
“For unknown reasons, the driver of the Volvo allowed his vehicle to collide into the rear of a 2013 Peterbilt tractor trailer combination and was ejected as a result of the collision,” CHP officials said in a statement.
The Volvo came to rest in the median and the Peterbilt was disabled on the westbound right shoulder. The driver of the Peterbilt was not injured, authorities said.
The collision was under investigation. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor, authorities said.
