Marshall County, MS : 93-year-old killed in collision with truck at Highway 309 and Kathleen Road in Byhalia on Friday, March 4, 2016

A 93-year-old woman died in a crash on Highway 309 just one day before her son's wedding.

Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the victim as Dorothy Bowers of Byhalia. MHP said she pulled out in front of a dump truck on Highway 309 and Kathleen Road around 8:30 a.m.

She was on the way home after having her hair done for her son's wedding. Bowers' family describes her as full of life. They said she teaches Sunday school and goes bowling every Wednesday night.

Witnesses said the area where Bowers crashed has seen more than its fair share of crashes.

In fact, neighbors who live in the area said they see crashes there all the time.

"It has made me very careful when I come out of my driveway," Joe Essary said.

A tree marked with crosses and Ole Miss signs sits just a few feet from where Bowers crashed. The tree is a living memorial for Grant Roberson, who crashed and died in a crash there in October.

Essary said the stretch of Highway 309 is filled with hills, which make it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles until it is too late.

He said another issue is drivers try to pass each other on the hilly roadway. People pulling out onto the highway often said they see the speeding cars when they decide to turn onto the highway.

Essary said something needs to be done to keep these crashes from happening so frequently.

We asked MHP just how many accidents happened in the area in the past year and what can be done to prevent them in the future. MHP is not yet able to release that information.
