Orange County, FL : Dump-truck driver killed in tire-separation crash on State Road 408 westbound near Pine Hills on Wednesday morning, October 29, 2014
A dump-truck driver was killed in a rollover crash Wednesday morning, which shut down a portion of State Road 408 westbound near Pine Hills.
Authorities said the driver of the truck lost control when it blew a tire about 10 a.m. and slid on the operating wall before crashing into a support column at the Pine Hills toll plaza.
Anthony Ross, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Authorities said it appeared as if the tread separated from the tire, which ultimately led to the crash.
"A lot of time, under-inflation can be an issue and sometimes just a worn tire," said Kim Montes of theFlorida Highway Patrol.
Witness Celest Falkner was in the oncoming lanes of traffic when she witnessed the crash.
"We looked up and saw a big dump truck and it was swerving back and forth, and it eventually lost control and flipped," she said.
Falkner said Ross appeared to be trying to bring the truck to a stop to avoid others drivers.
"He was merging over to get out of the way so that he wouldn't hit other cars, so in his own way he's like a hero," she said.
The load from the dump truck spread across the lanes of traffic, causing hours of closures as crews cleaned up.
No other injuries were reported.
