Crookston, MN : Woman injured after stealing, crashing UND police car near Crookston on Sunday morning, May 22, 2016

University of North Dakota police say a Missouri woman stole one of their squad cars Sunday morning and crashed it in a ditch near Crookston, Minn.

The squad car was stolen around 8:42 a.m. while UND police officers were searching for a lost and intoxicated individual at the Hamline Square Apartments near the campus. Witnesses told police the car had been stolen by a woman, later identified as Kasandra Ellis, 23, of Columbia, Mo.

Police used a GPS device to locate the stolen vehicle on Highway 2 near Crookston, Minn., where Ellis had crashed it into a ditch.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:22 a.m. Ellis was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Alcohol may have played a role in the crash, according to the Minnesota State Patrol incident report. It is currently under investigation.
