The Tennessee Highway Patrol and Metro Police have investigated three different fatal crashes in Middle Tennessee that all happened between 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday.
The first crash happened on I-24 in South Nashville around 7 p.m. Saturday night.
Metro police officials arrested and charged a suspected drunk driver, 31-year-old Elvin Portillo, with vehicular homicide by intoxication and other crimes. Police say he and another man attempted to flee the scene after causing another driver to swerve and crash.
The other driver, identified as 57-year-old Bobby Douglas, died on the scene. After he swerved to avoid crashing with Portillo's truck, officials say, his Ford 5-150 launched partially in the air and collided with a pole on the driver's side. The truck then caught fire.
