Mother, 3-year-old child die in afternoon crash on Jefferson Avenue

A mother and her 3-year-old child died in a crash on Jefferson Avenue Southwest this afternoon that left a truck on the edge of an overpass above 24th Street Southwest, Birmingham police said.
The crash happened about noon, Police Sgt. Johnny Williams said in an e-mail.

They were passengers in a vehicle driven by the father, who is the crash's lone survivor, he said.
Williams did not have further information available about the crash.The crash left the bed of a black truck hanging over the edge of the overpass and resulted in authorities shutting down travel across the overpass in both directions.
