Abbeville, LA : 88-year-old man dead, driver arrested in Vermilion Parish On Friday, March 6, 2015
An 88-year-old man is dead, and a 49-year-old man is in jail for his third-offense DWI after he struck and killed the victim in Vermilion Parish.
Louisiana State Police say it happened about 8 p.m. Friday on Louisiana Highway 82 west of Louisiana Highway 3147.
Investigators say Gary Shipman, of Cameron, was traveling westbound on Louisiana 82 when he saw Donald Broussard, of Pecan Island, walking in the same lane. Shipman swerved to avoid hitting Broussard, but struck the man, who was pronounced dead on the scene.
Shipman was arrested and booked with third-offense DWI, tampering with an ignition interlock device and open alcoholic container at the Vermilion Parish jail.
A chemical breath test showed Shipman's blood-alcohol content at .085 percent, higher than the state's .08 percent limit.
