ROCK HILL, SC : Man fleeing police charged in fatal wreck on Wednesday, 7th September 2016
Rock Hill, South Carolina
A man who was driving away from police was charged in a fatal multi-vehicle wreck in Rock Hill Wednesday afternoon.
The wreck happened just before 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Heckle Boulevard and Crawford Road, shutting the road down for a time.
Troopers say 23-year-old Stevie McClinton was driving away from Rock Hill Violent Crimes Unit in a Buick on Crawford Road when he disregarded the traffic signal and hit a Toyota Prius, pushing it into another vehicle. The right rear passenger in the Prius was flown to Carolinas Medical Center, but later died in the hospital, Rock Hill police said Thursday. She has been identified as Virginia Bartell, 72, of Ridgeway, SC.
Two passengers were in the Buick. Officials confirmed Wednesday that six people were injured, but did not release the extent of their injuries. One person had to be extricated from a vehicle, and was airlifted from the crash site.
Neighbor Angela Nance said her father-in-law was hurt in the crash and taken to the hospital. He has since been released from the ER.
“A lot of officers was passing us in a high-speed chase so I proceeded to come home and just as I did, I realized my father-in-law had been involved in an accident," said Nance.
McClinton was wanted by SC Probation and Parole. Investigators believed he may be selling guns out of his vehicle and considered him to be armed and dangerous. They tried to pull him over in a Buick, but police said McClinton sped off, ran the red light and hit the Prius.
McClinton then started running away from the scene, according to police. The officer caught up to him, but was punched by McClinton. Witnesses reportedly came to the officers aid and helped him get McClinton into custody.
Rock Hill police said they found "large amounts" of drugs in McClinton's car as well as two guns.
McClinton has been charged with failure to stop for blue lights with death, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury, gun charges and multiple drug charges.
