Jackson , MS : 49 Years old man was killed after he fall from his scooter and hit a pothole On Saturday , January 24th 2015

Potholes and deteriorating pavement plague the streets of the Capital City, but one Jackson resident says they pose a bigger danger to more vulnerable motorists on the roadways.

"If it wasn't for the fact that I was wearing a helmet I would have been dead," said Bert Johnson.

The 48 year old said his fall from his scooter after hitting a pothole this weekend could have cost him his life aside from the injuries he says he suffered.

The Jackson resident said he was riding a red motor bike north on Terry Road near the intersection of Wagwood Street around 5:30 Saturday when it happened.

"As I was dodging about three big ones, I hit an even bigger one and it flipped," said Johnson. "Threw the front end of my bike to the left and threw me to the right over the steering wheel and where I landed on my head and my shoulder."

The sales man blames the potholes and condition of Terry Road for his injuries and loss of his scooter.

"You dodge one, and there's another one," said Johnson. "There's just so many of them, you can't dodge them all."

He said he has lost his sole means of transportation, a scooter he's had only four months.

Drivers in the left lane of Terry Road nearing Interstate 20 encounter deep indentations in the pavement in the area Johnson described.

Most motorists try their best to slow down or go around the potholes but some others are caught off guard, hitting the uneven surface and paying the price with a jarring jolt.

We reached out to Jackson city spokeswoman Shelia Byrd about the scooter owner's concerns.

"We will look into the matter," said Byrd. We have not yet heard from Mr. Johnson."
