Mount Clemens, MI : Sterling Heights motorist killed in three-car collision on Wednesday, July 20, 2016

A 66-year-old motorist was killed and an elderly passenger suffered critical injuries Wednesday in a three-car accident that closed a Sterling Heights intersection for about three hours, police said in a news release.

Sgt. David Guerra said the incident occurred around 9 a.m. when the 66-year-old driver from Sterling Heights in a silver Dodge Intrepid disregarded a red light for westbound Metropolitan Parkway and was struck by a black Ford pick-up truck that was traveling north on Dequindre Road.

The impact pushed the Intrepid into a black Toyota Camry that was turning onto westbound Metropolitan Parkway from southbound Dequindre.

Sterling Heights firefighters rendered medical care to both victims at the scene and Universal Ambulance personnel rushed both men to Troy Beaumont Hospital. The 66-year-old driver died at the hospital and a 83-year-old man who was a passenger in the Intrepid was listed in critical condition, according to the release.

Police had to close the intersection to all traffic while officers conducted their investigation of the crash. The intersection was re-opened at 12:30 p.m.

Investigators said alcohol and speed were not factors in the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.
