Fire crews were responding to reports of an armored vehicle on fire on State Route 143 southbound near Loop 202 when two rollover crashes happened in the same area, resulting in one person dying and two others being taken to a hospital.

Phoenix and Tempe firefighters were working to control the fire and extricate someone from the armored vehicle when two additional rollover accidents were reported in the same area, Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Captain Kenny Overton said about 3:30 p.m.

An adult was pronounced dead on the scene and two men were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another adult refused ambulance transport, Overton said.

Southbound lanes on SR 143were reopened as of 8:44 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
