SALT LAKE CITY, UT : 9 injured in separate Utah crashes involving 9 vehicles on Saturday, December 10th, 2016

Two separate multi-vehicle crashes in the Salt Lake City area sent nine people to hospitals.

Authorities say three people were critically injured in a two-vehicle accident in Salt Lake City while six others were hospitalized after an eight-vehicle crash in Taylorsville earlier Saturday.

Salt Lake police say a pickup truck struck a passenger car around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

All three people in the car sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash, which remained under investigation Sunday.

Police say two people are in critical condition after the Taylorsville crash.

They say it appears all the vehicles were traveling in the same direction when one car with a possibly impaired driver rear-ended the others.

One person was thrown from a vehicle and another had to be extricated from a car.
