Sacramento County, CA : Pedestrian Struck And Killed Crossing Street In North Highlands on Monday afternoon, September 1, 2014
An 18-year-old pedestrian died after she was hit by an SUV while crossing Madison Avenue near Auburn Boulevard on Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.
Brianna Norman was struck by a Nissan Pathfinder about 4:25 p.m. in Sacramento County, according to a CHP news release.
Maria Guadalupe Valdiva, 47, sat behind the wheel of the Pathfinder. The Sacramento County woman had been traveling the speed limit in a 45 mph zone, police said.
Valdiva was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She was coming up on a green light for westbound traffic when Norman ran directly in front of the SUV's path, police said.
Valdiva was unable to stop the vehicle in time. Norman, also from Sacramento County, died at Mercy San Juan Hospital a short time after she arrived.
Norman was crossing the street -- not in a crosswalk -- heading south, on the north side of Madison Avenue. She was coming from a 7-Eleven store to a bus stop across the way, police said.
Valdiva wasn't hurt.
Police took several conflicting witness statements at the scene of the crash. Some people said there was a red sedan or a pickup truck that also clipped Norman and sped off.
Other witnesses insisted only the Nissan Pathfinder was involved.
Valdiva never left.
The CHP will investigate whether surveillance videos were in place.
Police are still looking into the incident as a possible hit-and-run crash until they can rule out the possibility of a second vehicle's involvement, the CHP said.
