Kamuela, HI : 20-year-old man died following a two-vehicle collision on Mamalahoa Highway in Kamuela early Saturday night, Oct 3, 2015
The Hawaii County Police Dept. reports that a 20-year-old Kamuela man died following a two-vehicle collision one-half mile south of the 3-mile marker on Mamalahoa Highway in Kamuela early Saturday night.
He has been identified as Jourdan Evangelista.
Responding to a 7:43 p.m. call, police determined that Evangelista was a front seat passenger in a green 1999 Volkswagen Jetta that had been traveling north on the highway when the car, upon negotiating a curve in the road, went out of control due to wet roadway conditions.
This caused the Jetta to veer into the oncoming southbound lane of travel, where it was involved in a broadside collision with a gold 2014 Dodge Caravan operated by a 55-year-old Waikoloa woman.
All occupants of vehicles involved in the crash were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment, where Evangelista was officially pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation and is asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, extension 229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
