Wake Forest, North Carolina
The suspect in a car theft was severely injured after he ran the car off the road, went through a guardrail and fell 100 feet down an embankment sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday, authorities said.Wake Forest police officers responded to the Bexley Apartments complex at Rogers Road and Heritage Lake Drive late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning after a man was seen trying to break into multiple vehicles. When police arrived, the man, identified as 20-year-old Samad Shaheem Lucas, sped off in a White Lexus that was registered to Sexton Auto, authorities said.
Lucas drove the Lexus down Heritage Lake Drive toward the N.C. Highway 98 bypass where police then lost sight of him.
Officials said that the Lexus was driven off the road, through a guardrail and down the embankment. Lucas suffered several broken bones, including his back and pelvis, officials with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.
Despite being severely injured, Lucas was able to hobble approximately 300 feet through the woods to a house in a nearby neighborhood that backed up to the road. He asked for medical help from the people inside the house. The residents then called police.
Police were able to connect Lucas to the stolen car and pursuit that had occurred earlier.
“People will go looking for easy victims. Another words they’ll go from car to car to see if there’s one that’s unlocked. If it is, they’ll take whatever out of there,” said Bill Crabtree with the Town of Wake Forest.
Lucas is currently being treated at WakeMed. He has been charged with felony speeding to elude arrest.
