Florence, AL : Two men died in single vehicle wrecks on Tuesday, October, 17th 2017
Two men died Tuesday in separate, single vehicle wrecks, one occurring on Lauderdale 14 and the other on U.S. 72.
A morning crash on Lauderdale 14 in Oakland claimed the life of Jerry Wayne Jones, 62, of Lauderdale 215, Florence.
Troopers said an afternoon crash on U.S. 72 claimed the life of Jarnais Montes Porter, 28, of Florence. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lauderdale Coroner Bruce Tucker.
The driver of the car in the crash on U.S. 72 has been identified as Larissa Bowlin, 24, of Killen. Tuesday night troopers said she was in ICU listed in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital.
Porter was a passenger in the Lincoln MKX, which crashed at 2:32 p.m. west of Brooks High School.
Reports indicate the car was traveling east when it ran off the south side of the road, then went across the two lanes hitting a crossover in the median and going airborne, flipping several times and coming to a stop back in the eastbound lane.
The crash ripped the driver’s side door off the car, ejecting Bowlin. Emergency personnel said when they arrived she was laying in the middle of the eastbound lane of U.S. 72. She was flown from the scene to Huntsville.
Killen Police Chief Bryan Hammond said a patrol unit had stopped the vehicle on a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 72 and Brush Creek Road (Lauderdale 63).
“They were traveling west and the officers had pulled them over on a traffic violation,” Hammond said. “(The driver) took off, turning back east trying to get away from the officer.”
Reports indicate the driver was weaving in and out of traffic before losing control of the car and crashing.
“I’m just glad she didn’t hit anyone else,” Hammond said.
He said since a member of his department made the initial traffic stop, he called in the state troopers to investigate the wreck.
In the Tuesday morning wreck, Col. Jeremy Baker, with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Quad-Cities Trooper’s post, said Jones died at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence.
Baker said the crash was reported at 7:30 a.m. on Lauderdale 14, five miles west of Florence in the Oakland community.
Reports indicate Jones was driving a 1978 GMC truck and was traveling east when the truck went off the road in a curve and slammed into the porch of a brick house.
Emergency personnel at the scene said the crash was so severe the motor of the truck was almost pushed into the cab.
Reports indicate Jones was not wearing his seat belt.
The Quad-Cities State Troopers post is investigating the crash.
